"Battle of the Badges"  The American Red Cross has set a challenge between the Police Departments and Fire Departments to donate blood to see who can win the title for most donations.  This is open to all first responders, families or anyone who would like to donate for the Red Cross.  Simply let them know who you would like your donation to count toward - POLICE or FIRE.  At the end of both blood drives, we'll see who our winner is!!

For information or an appointment, go to American Red Cross (sponsor code BerrienBattle) or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).  Donors will receive a free commemorative t-shirt while supplies last.

First Blood Drive will be held Saturday, December 6, 2014 at the Red Cross, 3838 Niles Road, St. Joseph, MI 49085 from 11:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.  A second Blood Drive is schedule to be held Saturday, December 20, 2014 at the Niles Fire Station from 11:00 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

The MDCH is reminding those that live or work within 10 miles of a nuclear power plant and who have free potassium iodide (KI) for their emergency stockpiles to check the expiration date on their KI boxes.  Much of the KI that has been dispensed in the past few years expired in October, 2014.  Replacement KI is available for no cost at Meijer Pharmacies.  MDCH mailed information to those with KI with the October expiration and included a voucher to be completed and taken to Meijer Pharmacy.  Vouchers and a list of participating pharmacies are also posted at  ONLY TAKE KI at the instruction of officials in the event of a plant emergency.  You may also call 517-335-8350 for more information.

Emergency Management in Berrien County is a comprehensive approach involving a range of public and private agencies including local police, fire and EMS agencies, the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division, the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality, and the National Weather Service. Other agencies involved with emergency management include the American Red Cross, local and state health departments, educators and amateur radio operators.

Emergency preparedness is the responsibility of every citizen. Therefore, county residents and businesses should develop a basic plan to help ensure their safety during these situations.
